  •  Wanganui, 19th August 2018 – Westmere Bulk Spreading Ltd Rst Open Hurdle 3000m (jockey Buddy Lammas)

Owned by: Mrs G L Alexander, G & A Hill Trust, M G Harvey, Miss G M McKenzie, Mrs C G Robinson, Miss k F Stratton & Taikorea Thoroughbreds Ltd

Bigredmoon won his maiden race, a Highweight 1650m, at Waverley back in July 2015. Since then he’s been a bit up and down, but he has certainly come into his own this winter with four impressive wins, three over hurdles. This 8YO gelding by Viking Ruler seems happy mixing hurdle and flat racing and followed up his four wins with a very good third in a 3120m flat race at Taranaki.
His happy owners are no doubt over the moon with his fabulous recent performances.

MAUNA KEA – three wins since June

  • Waverley, 28th June 2018 – Nufarm R65 1650m (jockey Jonathan Parkes)
  • Egmont, 2nd August 2018 – Dennis Yaxley 1600m R72 (jockey Jonathan Parkes)
  • Taranaki, 25th August 2018 – ITM Interprovincial Challenge 1600m R82 (jockey Jonathan Parkes)

Owned by: The Franz Josef Trust, Paul Bardell, Luke Van Tongeren-Costello, Brian O’Dea & Mrs Judith Hewitt

After some good placed form, Mauna Kea won his maiden on 27th May at Egmont and has gone on for three more excellent wins, most notably the ITM Interprovincial Challenge in New Plymouth. Regular rider Jonathan Parkes had him up on the pace, he took the lead at the 600 and stayed there. With four wins under his belt in three months, this 5YO chestnut gelding is sure to give his proud owners more thrills.

ALI BABA – two wins since June

  • Matamata, 25th July 2018 – Norwood Farm Machinery 2000m R70 (jockey Shafiq Rusof)
  • Matamata, 29th August 2018 - Transport Mechanical Waharoa Ltd 2000m R72 (jockey Jake Bayliss)

Owned by: B G & Mrs D G Neville-White, Ballymore Stables NZ Ltd & Ballymore Stables (Aust) Pty Ltd

Another horse with four wins to his credit, including two recent victories in a row at his home track. His maiden win was in a 3YO race back in October 2015, his second win in February 2017. Good to see this 6YO Savabeel gelding back in winning form.
No doubt his owners think so too!

THEE OLD COUGAR – two wins since June

  • Wanganui, 5th July 2018 – Spooners Dry Cleaners Maiden 3YO 1600m (jockey Ryan Elliott)
  • Wanganui, 8th September 2018 – Dave Hoskin Carriers 1600m R65 (jockey Danielle Johnson)
Owned by: B G Bambry, A L Clapperton, G J Grylls, H Houghton, D J Hurrell, W G John, D W Lund, M J & Mrs V Milsom, R L Olliver, C J Otto, M W Pickford, P G Pinfold, M C Roughead, S B Thompson, M H Tims, C G Tonks, D J Wakelin, P G Wakeling, J G, M R & Mrs S K Young

Thee Old Cougar won her maiden race second up as a 3YO, followed by a creditable fourth and fifth in her next races.
She then won again nicely as a 4YO. Trained by Stephen Marsh in Cambridge, she obviously enjoys racing at Wanganui!

HE KIN FLY – Riccarton, 4th August 2018 – Vaine Strickland – 40 years NZTR Premier 1400m R72 (jockey Terry Moseley)

Owned by: E & K J Corby, D Eyles, B J & Mrs M A Harvey & S W Ridley

He sure did fly on this day, winning by a neck and thereby clocking up his fourth win from 18 starts.
By Darci Brahma, He Kin Fly raced in Hong Kong in 2017, before returning and going south to Neil Ridley’s stables at Riccarton.

IMBLAZE – Matamata, 25th July 2018 – Fiber Fresh 1400m R75 (jockey Tegan Newman)

Owned by: D H, D P H, D S, Mrs J M & Mrs V Lunn

This 6YO mare by Battle Paint put in two good wins in a row back in May, and then came out and won again in July, followed by a nice second. All her four wins have been at Matamata in heavy going.

ZEDEEDUDADEEKO – Trentham, 14th July 2018 – Annuka Smoker Wellington Hurdle 3400m Prestige Jumping Race (jockey Charlie Studd)

Owned by: J P Phillips & The McInteer Family Trust

After being pulled up in his previous race, 10YO Zedeedudadeeko (it’s easier to say than spell!) strode out at Trentham to chalk up his seventh win (3 on the flat, 4 over hurdles). Seeing those pale blue silks flying over the jumps out in front must have given his owners a huge thrill.

NEDDY NADEEM – Matamata, 13th October 2018 – Stanley Group 1600m Maiden (jockey Samantha Collett)

Owned by: Mrs A G A Cross, Mrs S Dower, M W Gething, T R & Mrs V M Pascoe, Mrs N Rochester, Mrs J A Rodgers, Mrs J M Stubbs & Mrs P E M Woollaston

Well it took Neddy 26 attempts, but he finally got there and clinched his maiden win. It was a large field, with plenty of talent, and Neddy was on the ballot at No. 21. He made the field, and he served it up to them all, leading all the way in his lime green colours. The second horse was coming hard but Neddy was having none of it and kept on until his nose was past that finish line. He won by a short head and, now he’s had a taste of winning, he will hopefully give his elated owners more winning treats.

See Neddy’s story on the Racing Tales page.

MIGHTY ME – Counties, 23rd September 2018 – Splice Construction Ltd 1200m R82 (jockey Sam Spratt)

Owned by: P J Walker

A great win by this 8YO gelding by Choisir, bringing his win total to five. Owner Peter Walker had double delight also he also part-owns the second placegetter in the race, Midnight Runner. Even better, Peter was able to celebrate with a bunch of passionate horse owners as the win came at the Owners Spring Race Day. It was a wonderful moment with smiles and joy all round.

DALLA MOSA – Woodville, 18th October 2018 – David and Ellen Oliver at Konini 1400m Maiden (jockey Dylan Turner)

Owned by: K Brown, M A Collinson, B T Cottrill, Fairdale Stud Ltd, A R Fenwick, Mrs S J Fenwick, J Hercoe, J Scarlett, Mrs H B Templeton & C J Waugh

This 4YO mare by Alamosa got up to win her maiden at her fifth start. It was a close-run thing with a well-timed finish; she got up by a head. Congratulations go to all her owners, especially NZTROF Executive member Allan Fenwick and his wife, and Michael Collinson who has served on the Board. Looks like an in-depth post-race conversation with the jockey, getting all the details! Let’s hope she goes on for more wins.
