WINNING HORSES – January to May 2018
14 May 2018
We’re focussing on Maiden wins for this Gallery – that often-elusive, always-heartwarming day when your horse, in which you have so much belief, finally does you proud! For some of us, it’s also the one and only day we are not on track, but those who can get along and see that inaugural win know the all-encompassing feeling of elation that being there to celebrate brings.
MISS FOXY GAL – two recent wins

Hastings, 1st January 2018 – Roger Russell/Charlie Keenan Memorial Maiden 1600m (jockey Darryl Bradley)

Rotorua, 13th April 2018 – ICSL 1560m R65 (jockey Jake Bayliss)

Owned by: A F Abel ONZM & Mrs C I Abel

Sent out favourite at Hastings, and distinctive in yellow silks, she ran a textbook race to win her Maiden, staying handy and peeling to the outside with a sustained run to the post. After running 7th, 4th and 5th in her next three races, she was victorious again at Rotorua in April, peeling even wider this time for a well-timed run to get up by a long head. Nice work!

Taranaki, 3rd February 2018

Fasttrack Insurance Oaks Prelude 3YOF SW 1800m Listed Race (jockey Michael McNab)

Owned by: Ms V G McIntosh & I W Moses

In her fourth race, this 3YO Mastercraftsman filly showed what she is made of. Nicely ridden, she was back early and brought round the field where she put her foot down and bolted away for a 2½ L win – and a very nice stakes-earning to boot. Not to mention her sizzling Last 600m time of 0.35.42 which was more than a second faster than her rivals.

Her owners would have been full of eager anticipation at her next outing, the Little Avondale Lowland Stakes. Alas, she got badly blocked for a run and can be forgiven for her 9th placing, which was only 4.4L from the winner.
We’ll be keeping an eye on her next run.

LUBAYA – two recent wins

Wanganui, 16th February 2018 – NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden F&M Race 1360m (jockey Rosie Myers)

Hastings, 29th April 2018 – Mulcaster Bloodstock Mile R65 1600m (jockey Chris Johnson)

Owned by: Dame Lowell Goddard, J & A Looner, J A Roache, M Fearon & R J Wiltshire

With trial form under her belt, Lubaya couldn’t quite find a winning turn of foot – although we must point out that she had been aiming high with runs in the Group 3 Hawkes Bay Breeders Stakes, the Wellington Guineas Trial and then the Group 1 Canterbury Guineas.  Set a somewhat easier task on 16th February, and sent out hot favourite, she romped home from the rear right down the outside for an outstandingly good win, accompanied by exuberant side-line cheering. There was only a long neck in it, but she was flying home.

After a 2-9-5-4 follow-up formline, this 3YO Rip Van Winkle filly showed similar talent and style at Hastings, romping home down the outside to win by ½L. More celebrations to come with this filly we think!

Wairoa, 25th February 2018 – Wairoa Star Sprint 1200m Maiden (jockey Sam Weatherley)

Owned by: Te Akau Remington Steele Syndicate (Mgr: D C Ellis) – some members of this syndicate are NZTROF members

After two seconds at the trials, Remington was ready to race. First up he ran a creditable second with a strong late finish. Second up, he stayed handy, got to the lead and remained there nicely for a well-earned ½L win. Since then he’s had two close-up second placings. Another win is on the cards, we have no doubt. This syndicate is in for some fun!

Riverton, 31st March 2018

South Pacific Meats Maiden 1400m (jockey Jason Laking)

Owned by: Dr H M & Dr W J Bishop, L G R Didham, Dr H W L Ranken & Dr A R Turner

This son of Coat’s Choice was favourite for his race on Day 1 of the Riverton Easter Carnival. Midfield and wide for much of the race, Jason skilfully switched him towards the inside where he found a gap and his top gear, driving though in style as the post loomed, winning by a head. An exciting Maiden race finish.

On the day, Jason received The Sam McRae Memorial trophy on the day – in memory of jockey Sam McRae who died in a racefall at Riverton in March 2005, aged just 16.

Timaru, 4th April 2018

Clearview Park Stud Sprint 1200m Maiden (jockey Jacob Lowry)

Owned by: J R J I Drinkwater & On Point Syndicate

What a lovely win by this 4YO Rios mare. Jacob had her positioned nice and handy and she let down with ease in the straight. After a tough tussle towards the winning post with the red hot favourite, On Point kept up her strong run with determination and got the win. With a support crew on course, there would have been some very happy celebrations going on after this gorgeous ½ Neck maiden win, her sixth race. More to come we hope.

Taranaki, 5th April 2018 – Seaton Park Maiden 1400m (jockey Troy Harris)

Owned (and bred) by: Noel George, Ivor Edwards, Blair Gemmell, Tony Dravitzki, Bruce Verry, Kris & Stephanie George

Forced to race wide most of the way on the Dead4 track, he put in a serious challenge at the 100m mark and kept up a strong gallop for a very gutsy win by ½L. We’ll watch this quirkily-named son of D’Cash with interest as he finishes off his 3YO season.

Waikato, 14th April 2018

Risk Advice Ltd 1600m Maiden (jockey Maija Vance)

Owned by: P J Bucknell, S G M Bulman, L & S R Durrant, P & T Ford, K W Green, R P James, P G Proverbs, D W J Sexton, B Simpkin, R Thornley, S B Wilshier & L Wood

A bit of perseverance paid off with this gelding who, after seven starts since his first race in December 2017, hadn’t quite reaped the rewards hoped for. However, on start no. 8, after settling back at the start, Maija guided him nicely to the outside where he pushed forward strongly and won by a short head. Paid a nice price too! More of that please!

Southland, 15th April 2018 – Northern Sports Bar Maiden 1200m (jockey Shankar Muniandy)

Owned by: P G Doughty, J F Dooley & Miss G Robinson

After a string of good minor placings, including enough seconds to make an owner’s heart weep, Verify got up for a well-deserved maiden win. Tucked on the inside for much of the running, Shankar pulled her out turning for home where she ran away from them, looking absolutely lonely out in front. A strong win indeed. She followed up with a battling 4th at Riverton, but we are sure there are more wins in store for this 5YO Stravinsky mare.
