WINNING HORSES – Feburary to April/May 2017
11 May 2017

Celebration time for Auckland Association President Mike Gething and Vice-President Sally Blyth – both had winning horses over previous weeks – celebration time!

MINERVA – Wingatui, 26th April 2017 – Wingatui Top Track Team 1600m (jockey Rafi Fidhaus)

Owned by:  Silverstream Racing Ltd, Sally Blyth, Fui Pang, Roger Dibben, Derek Brook, Mark White, Samarra Wright, Michael Abernethy & Aaron Taylor

This Perfectly Ready mare, who has shown ability but not had all favours over her 12 starts, weaved her way through a capacity field for a well-deserved hands-and-heels maiden win. Patience has paid off, with both physical and the all-important mental maturity kicking in. Minerva loves her job. Trainer and part-owner Aaron Taylor has worked a bit of magic. Owners ecstatic, inc. Auckland Vice-President Sally!
NB: She followed this win up with a robust 2nd at Riccarton on 6th May in a very large and even field – she got held up but finished very well once she saw daylight. With a formline of 2312, her owners are over the moon and can barely wait for her next start!

THE KIPLING GIRL – Matamata, 3rd May 2017 – AA Auto Service & Repair Matamata 1400m (jockey Kelly McCulloch)

Owned by:  S Chapman, Mrs S Dower, M W Gething, D King, T R & Mrs V M Pascoe, Mrs N Rochester, Mrs J A Rodgers, Mrs J M Stubbs & Mrs P E M Woollaston

What a superb 4½L win by this 4YO High Chaparral mare, romping away in style, her green colours prominent throughout. Patience really does pay dividends and Kip created that Cloud 9 feeling for her happy owners (inc. Auckland President Mike!) who were on track to celebrate the win. Let’s hope there’s more romping away to be done …

BOSTONIAN – Hawke’s Bay, 15th April 2017 – FastTrack Insurance 2YO 1300m (jockey Leith Innes)

Owned by: Archer Equine Investments Ltd

A talented young horse, by Jimmy Choux, who knows what the game is about – he won his trial, won his first-up (at Avondale 24th March) and was way too good for his rivals second-up, kicking away for a very smart win. (See the May bulletin issue for more information about Bostonian and his owner).

LIGHT EM UP – Wanganui, 17th February 2017 – Wanganui Greyhound Club Racing Tonight 1600m (jockey Rosie Myers)

Owned by: Craig Thorburn, Max & Matthew Dravitzki, Michael Boland, George Campbell, Dane Williams, Robyn Johnson, Daryl Curnow, Adam Newell, The Rise & Shine Syndicate, Doug & Jeremy Williams

A nice 3L maiden win on 24th December at Taranaki was followed up with a 2¾L win at Wanganui in February. This 4YO Rip Van Winkle mare likes to be up front and showed prowess with both wins. With 9 wins/placings from 10 starts, she obviously likes her work, and her owners will have big smiles and be hoping for more where these wins came from.

JAZZMAN – Riverton, 15th April 2017 – Waiau Hotel Aparima Open Handicap 1200m (jockey Amanda Morgan)

Owned by: A J, Mrs E A & J G Carran & M R Pitman

Jazzman headed to the lead, stayed there, kept finding and went all the way to the line for a lovely win on a Dead5 track.  With 11 wins under his belt, this 7YO One Cool Cat gelding continues to race strongly when everything is in tune.

BIG MIKE – Ellerslie, 22nd April 2017 – White Refrigeration 1600m R65 (jockey Leith Innes)

Owned by: G S & S A Fausett, C K, K B & B L Phelan

To win the last race in a big field at Ellerslie is no mean feat.  Big Mike was handy in the trail, and really gathered himself together to push forward and drive home for the win.  His maiden win two stars earlier at Bay of Plenty was hugely impressive and following up like this on a premier day is exciting indeed. Definitely worth keeping a big eye on Big Mike.

ULTRA CHIC – Riccarton, 24th February 2017 – NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200m (jockey Kevin Kalychurun)

Owned by: Lacy Stewart, Pat Collins, Aaron Tapper, Elvena & Karyn Stewart

Ultra Chic’s racing career started out with a second at the trials, then a ninth at the track. Another second at the trials, and then another ninth at the track.  And then came a very nice 2L win for this 4YO Sakhee’s Secret mare. In a Pearl Series race and at a very nice price too – double bonus!
