Owned by: Calder Bloodstock Ltd, G L Currie, Bruce Honeybone & Deborah Martin, M L Gibson, P B C Sipos & T W Archer Trust
With four wins from six starts, this filly seems headed for great things. She gave a great sight at Riccarton on Cup Day, pouncing past her rivals and, as shown by the many smiles, jockey and owners all enjoyed the huge thrill of this special Group 1 win.
MAID OF STEEL
MAID OF STEEL – Pukekohe Park, 19th November 2016 – H R Fisken & Sons Ltd 1600m OPN HCP (jockey Danielle Johnson)
Owned by: J H & Mrs S Goodman
A superb front-running win by this talented grey mare – she rallied well and held on for her fifth win, on a grey and misty day. She then backed it up with another nice win at Ellerslie on 29th December, this time getting up late from the trail. And then scored a hat trick at Thames on 8th January when, as hot favourite in a small field, she gained another solid front-running win. Made of steel all right!
CALLIGRAPHY – Waipa, 24th November 2016 – Irwins Trucks and Buses 1400m R65 (jockey Viktoria Gatu)
Owned by: A D, Mrs J M & Mrs K J Mayne
This mare’s second win showed real grit and determination – out in front, she held the lead and kicked nicely clear under a great ride. She has since put in good efforts for and 2nd and a 3rd in subsequent races. Her overall stats read pretty well and she’s worth keeping an eye on.
SWISSTA – Ellerslie, 1st January 2017 – Jamieson Park Great Northern Guineas 1600m Group 2 3YO SW (jockey Alysha Collett)
Owned by: Carol Findlay, Barry Jensen, Julian Ede, Carol Kidd, Pat Fruin, Gerald Shand, Janet Hepi, Wigg Wilson, Richard & Judy Collett
A smart horse this one – he took out a hat trick on New Year’s Day at Ellerslie. After his maiden win at Avondale on 15th November, he backed up with another good win at Ellerslie on 11th December. And then he topped it off with a superb run to get the New Year off to a fantastic start. His owners, trainers, breeders and all those associated with him must be proud indeed.
TIPTRONIC – Waipa, 24th November 2016 – Vilagrad 1400m Mdn 3yo (jockey Craig Grylls)

After being wide, this O’Reilly gelding got up for a strong maiden win at Te Awamutu. He also had a dingdong duel with Swissta (above) on New Year’s Day, finishing a close second. May there be more wins in the pipeline.
RUUD NOT TOO
RUUD NOT TOO – Ellerslie, 26th December 2016 – Dunstan Feeds Rising Stars Championship Final, Special Conditions, 1500m (jockey Danielle Johnson)
Owned by: Go Racing Ruud Not Too Syndicate (Mgr: Albert Bosma)
Well it doesn’t get much better than this if you’re a syndicate owner – winning a Premier race on Boxing Day at Ellerslie is something all owners dream of. This girl did it again for her owners on New Year’s Day by winning the Rich Hill Mile. What a buzz the syndicate members must have had watching her tough it out for two very gutsy and impressive wins.
CHARLES ROAD – Tauranga, 2nd January 2017 – Fashion in the Field Japan Cup Day March 25th 1600m Maiden (jockey Craig Grylls)
Owned by: Archer Equine Investments Ltd
An impressive maiden win by this 3YO gelding who raced wide throughout, and a little greenly. He looped the field nicely, making good ground and, despite wanting to lay in down the home straight, he romped away for a win that kept the punters happy. More in store, for sure!
