WINNING HORSES – October 2018 to January 2019
28 Feb 2019

GORBACHEV – Trentham, 19th January 2019 – NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup – 3200m Group 3 (jockey Ryan Elliott)

Owned by: P Bardell, F J P Huwyler, B K O'Dea & K T O'Donnell

After some nice lead-up form, Gorbachev (known as Bugs) fought hard to get up by a nose in the Wellington Cup. What a finish – there would have been some very nervous moments while the judge studied the close photo. This was his fourth win, his previous being the Redwood Trophy on 1st September 2018 at Hawkes Bay. A group of very happy owners with great cause for celebration.

(See Gorbachev’s story in the March 2019 issue of the NZTROF Bulletin).

HIGH SPIRITS – Trentham, 27th October 2018 – BCD Travel Rugby & Racing Tour to Japan RWC with Des Coppins Premier, 2400m R82 (jockey Cameron Lammas)

Owned by: H M Gudsell, R S Grocott, R J Curtis, N W Norwood, C S Griffith, R Koorey, J H McLaughlin, B W & A Keighley, 916 Syndicate, M G Donnelly & J G Bary

This 6YO mare’s last win was back in December 2017 at Trentham. After a run of up-and-down form since then, she got back to business with a smart win, weaving through the field and pouncing on the line for ½ length win (beating none other than the above-mentioned Gorbachev). This was also High Spirits’ fourth win. We’ll keep an on both next time they grace the track.

SON OF MAHER – Riccarton, 9th October 2018 – Coupland’s Bakeries Mile Prelude, 1400m Open Hcp (jockey Tina Comignaghi)

Owned by: M I Deans, C J Griffin, G D Hawker, Mrs L McCalmont-Deans, B B McCullum, P B McLaughlin, G G Palmer, M R Pitman, A G & Mrs J A Pulley, Mrs B J & K M Voyce

Since winning back in October 2018, when he came with a well-timed run to win by ½ neck, this Pitman-trained gelding by Al Maher hasn’t shown quite the same prowess in his six starts since – but with 7 wins and 18 placings from his 38 starts, he is one with ability. We’ll continue watching.

STAR KAREN – Whangarei, 5th January 2019 – Corona 2100m Maiden (jockey Michael Coleman)

Owned by: Jamieson Park Ltd, Robert McAuley, Jason Grace, Richard Frechtling, Kane Norton & Brendan Pope

A lovely maiden win, by a head, for this 3YO filly by Camelot. She was hot favourite and delivered. Her next race was a Group 2 at Waikato, which she didn’t see out, followed by racing at a premier meeting at Ellerslie on 16th February where she was crowded but ran on nicely. We’ll keep on eye on things to see when she shines again.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: After a creditable third at Counties, Star Karen went on to run a fantastic third in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai NZ Oaks at Trentham on Saturday 16th March 2019 – she was slow away and settled last, jockey Robbie Hannam sent her forward at the 1200 and she swooped around the field full of running. This sort of run can come to an end, especially in a race of this quality, but Star Karen kept surging forward. She looked like she might win at one point, but Sentimental Miss took first prize, with Beyond the Fort running second. It was a tremendous effort by Star Karen at her 8th start. She paid a handsome $15 for third place; the punters may not have been supporters but her owners, who were on course, were yelling the stand down with excitement in the final stages.
We believe oysters were on the menu that night!

ELANA ROSE – Motukarara, 4th November 2018 – Famous Grouse Hotel, 1400m R65 (jockey Terry Moseley)

Owned by: Mrs C & L R Beckett, E E & W L Mountfort, R G Neason, D B & Mrs P J Nind

After coming last at her previous start at Ashburton after racing wide, this 5YO mare by Coat’s Choice came back with a strong win by a long neck even though she was slow away. That was her second win from 20 starts. Let’s hope there are more wins to come.

LINCOLN FALLS – Trentham, 8th December 2018 – Lone Star Petone Premier 1400m 3YO SW+P (jockey Jonathan Parkes)

Owned by: Lincoln Farms Bloodstock, Kamada Racing & Sixforsixty Syndicate

After coming second in a trial, Lincoln Falls went on to win this race, being eased clear from the 200m mark and winning by 1¼ length. That was second win from six starts, and in his career to date, this 3YO colt by Dundeel has never been further back than 5th place. This includes his trial form (has won two and come 2nd). He shows plenty of promise, one to watch.

SINARAHMA – Wanganui, 1st December 2018 – AME Electrical 1340m R65 (jockey Jonathan Parkes)

Owned by: A Baeyertz, G A MacDonald, G H Phillips, S A Sharrock, J P Goodin, B R Sharrock & T Kemp

This was the second win on the trot for this 4YO mare by Darci Brahma who, in her five career starts, has also never been further back than 5th place. She has some nice trials form as well. After chiming in at Wanganui, she raced away for a smart 3 ¼ length victory. She’s been close-up in two races since; we’re sure she’ll go on with it.

HEAD OFFICE – Cromwell, 2nd December 2018 – Fresh Choice Cromwell 2030m Maiden (jockey Robert Hannam)

Owned & trained by: Peter R Corbett & Terrill T Charles

It took 22 starts and a few placings but finally this 6YO gelding by Zabeel broke through for a win, by a neck, on a Good3 track at Cromwell. After a slow beginning, he worked to the lead and hung on strongly. His runs since then have been a bit up and down, but hopefully there’s another win or two to come.
